The effect of non-English speaking countries adopting English as the primary means of compulsory education is a worthy topic of discussion. Even though it can open opportunities for the students, it is still generally a detrimental trend due to its impact on local workforce and culture.

Admittedly, I have sympathy for the idea that having a strong grasp of English opens doors for students in poorer regions of the world. This makes English doubly impactful, providing the graduates with the language skills necessary for immigration to an English-speaking country that offers higher salaries than their local job market. But, this approach of restructuring one’s entire education around English inadvertently primes a country’s youth to look abroad, while lowering the barrier for the most gifted students to emigrate elsewhere.

Firstly, by giving the best and brightest local students an easier path toward immigration, the local industries, universities, and political bureaucracy lose the necessary brain power that can step into important positions and improve local economic situations so immigration becomes unnecessary, leaving pivotal national roles to be filled by less competitive individuals. What is perhaps more damaging is the importation of foreign ideals that clash with local beliefs. This is because a language is not a neutral carrier for a speaker’s thoughts. It comes pre-packaged with value-laden phrases that can change how one sees the world. Take the phrase “fall in love” as an example. It creates an image of an uncontrollable condition of excitement and possible danger, which is contradictory to how other languages describe the process of two people building a relationship, such as Arabic, in which the start of a relationship is described as a seed that grows. Though it may appear harmless, if the idea of “falling in love” takes hold in a culture where the feeling associated with a romantic relationship is traditionally less dramatic, young people will find themselves at a loss in terms of how to think about and interact with potential partners.
