The idea that past cultures are irrelevant for students today is a worthy topic of discussion. It is true that stories about ancient triumphs and victories of one’s own ancestors can lead modern readers to engage in idle hero worship or even feelings of accomplishment that are entirely unearned. Worse yet, the simplistic ways ancient cultures are presented on certain platforms or texts may lead people today to falsely believe that the world was better “back then”. Firstly, young students' engaging in the study of their own ancient history helps a country build a strong national identity. This is because a monocultural community is partially kept intact by its members sharing a common understanding of their past. Beyond that, a multicultural community needs an understanding of ancient cultures even more. By having a clearer understanding of the evolution of values in different cultures and the adaptation of their customs across the ages, students may come to understand that the ideas we hold so dearly today are actually a snapshot of present circumstances.
