Firstly, to identify the root causes behind driving while texting, we can first focus on how boring driving can be when compared to people’s other daily moments. When traffic has stalled or during long and unimpeded stretches on the highway, the act of driving becomes incredibly monotonous and unengaging. However, modern life has conditioned most people to expect excitement at all times and it had conditioned us to be accustomed to take in new stimuli continuously, whether we are receiving notifications on delivery of packages we ordered a few days ago, being bombarded with advertisements on every public surface, or texting friends from halfway across the world. Thus, the tediousness of driving runs contrary to rest of our waking time, and our brains are craving for the next surge of dopamine and our phones are the delivery system for that drug.

Moreover, another element is the role of social norms around availability. With the proliferation of smartphones and the convenient communication applications on them, workers are under immense pressure to reply to work-related texts, emails, or calls immediately, at the risk of losing favor with colleagues and managers. Consequently, receiving a text while driving places drivers between a rock and a hard place, testing their adherence to two different societal expectations that demand entirely different courses of action. And many drivers end up complying with their social obligations that more directly impact their livelihood over more abstract legal duties.

To counter the issue surrounding our demand for constant sensory stimulation, self-driving cars might be the only viable option. We cannot expect the majority of people to fight against their own boredom and win every time they get behind a wheel, so a situation where we no longer need to control said wheel might be the only option. Furthermore, if governments enact stronger labor laws that restrict company communications with employees during off-duty hours, employees may feel more comfortable ignoring work-related messages that come pop up during a drive. For instance, if workers could report their managers to the labor department and the managers would face severe punishment for contacting workers beyond working hours, employers may also think twice before sending texts at inappropriate times.
