1 diminishing role of family
The trend of people spending less time at home is a worthy topic of discussion. The primary reason is the changing role of family in society; its impacts are both positive and negative.译文：人们居家时间减少这一趋势值得探讨。主要原因是家庭在社会中的角色转变；其带来的影响有利有弊。One contributor to the change in how we spend our time is the fact that family no longer plays an essential role in people’s everyday existence. Not too long ago, people worked on their family farm with several generations of their relatives and after work, people kept each other company, entertaining one another. With industrialization, more productive labor could be performed away from home, in factories and more recently in offices, keeping the adults away from home for the vast majority of the day. A consequence of this unprecedented economic output is the fact that entertainment options have widened, creating industries that compete for our attention and participation, pushing us to go further and further away from traditional domestic life.译文：导致人们时间分配方式发生变化的一个原因，是家庭不再在人们的日常生活中发挥核心作用。不久之前，人们和几代亲属一同在自家农场劳作，下班后彼此陪伴、相互消遣。随着工业化推进，更多高效生产劳动可以在家庭之外开展 —— 先是工厂，近些年则是办公室，让成年人一天中的绝大部分时间都远离家门。这种前所未有的经济产出带来的一个结果，是娱乐选择日益丰富，各类产业争相吸引人们的注意力、引导人们参与其中，推动我们越来越远离传统的家庭生活。A notable effect of the changing behavioral pattern is the freedom it has granted each individual. Constantly surrounded by family, acquiescing to others’ demands, fulfilling their expectations, people may never discover their own point of view and passion. In other words, time away from one’s family creates the necessary space, both physical and mental, for people to find and live their own life. However, freedom is a double-edged sword. The cost of individual freedom is paid for by society through delinquency and mistrust. Given that people are inherently social creatures with a long developmental period, without proper socialization in the form of consistent parental presence, more children are apt to manifest anti-social tendencies, shamelessly breaking conventions or laws. Rarely do cases of juvenile delinquency involve a youngster who grew up in a loving home of active and supportive parents.
