Economic development and environmental protection are two major challenges faced by governments today. While some people argue that economic growth should be the main priority because it improves living standards and promotes social progress, others believe that protecting the natural environment is more important for the future. In my opinion, although economic development is essential, environmental protection should receive greater attention because it determines whether future growth can be sustained.
经济发展和环境保护是当今政府面临的两大挑战。虽然有些人认为经济增长应该作为首要任务，因为它提高了生活水平并促进了社会进步，但其他人认为保护自然环境对未来更为重要。在我看来，尽管经济发展至关重要，但环境保护应该得到更多的关注，因为它决定了未来增长能否持续。
On the one hand, there are strong arguments in favour of prioritising economic development. A prosperous economy can create more employment opportunities, increase household incomes and improve people's overall quality of life. In addition, economic growth provides governments with greater financial resources, which can be invested in essential public services such as education, healthcare and infrastructure. For example, many developing countries have successfully reduced poverty and improved living conditions through industrialisation and economic expansion. Therefore, focusing on economic development can help societies achieve immediate improvements and solve various social problems.
一方面，有强有力的论据支持优先考虑经济发展。繁荣的经济可以创造更多的就业机会，增加家庭收入，提高人们整体的生活质量。此外，经济增长为政府提供了更多的财政资源，这些资源可以投资于教育、医疗和基础设施等基本公共服务。例如，许多发展中国家通过工业化和经济扩张成功地减少了贫困，改善了生活条件。因此，关注经济发展可以帮助社会实现立竿见影的改善并解决各种社会问题。
On the other hand, protecting the natural environment is important because environmental damage can have serious long-term consequences. Excessive industrial activity and the overuse of natural resources may result in pollution, climate change and the loss of biodiversity. These problems can negatively affect public health and reduce economic productivity in the future. For instance, polluted air and water may increase healthcare costs, while environmental degradation can threaten agricultural production. In conclusion, economic development plays a vital role in improving people's current living standards, particularly in less developed areas. However, I believe that environmental protection should be given greater priority because long-term economic prosperity cannot be achieved without a healthy natural environment.总之，经济发展在提高人民当前生活水平方面发挥着至关重要的作用，特别是在欠发达地区。然而，我认为环境保护应该得到更大的重视，因为如果没有健康的自然环境，长期的经济繁荣是无法实现的。
